Software Imaging & Ubiquisys Demonstrate Smartphone Printing Over Netowork of Enterprise 3G Femtocells
Mobile World Congress Demo of Android App that Enables Direct Printing of Enterprise Documents via Self-Organising Network (SON) of Femtocells
Oxford and Swindon, UK – 9th February 2010 - Software Imaging Ltd, a leader in mobile printing solutions, and Ubiquisys Ltd, the leading provider of 3G femtocells, will demonstrate the world’s first smartphone printing from a 3G femtocell network at this year’s Mobile World Congress. The Software Imaging NGPA Mobile Printing Application on Android smartphones enables users to print enterprise documents directly from the mobile device over the 3G femtocells. The system will be demonstrated to customers and partners in the Ubiquisys hospitality suite at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on 15-18 February 2010.
NGPA enables printing from all major smartphones to both networked and directly connected printers. The app can automatically discover and configure printers and provides the user with a “Three Clicks” printing experience removing the need to download printer drivers or program in complex network and printer characteristics. The user just selects the document they want to print, chooses the printer they want and prints.
“This is yet another example of how self-organising femto networks are about much more than providing a great mobile service at work,” said Will Franks, Founder and CTO, Ubiquisys. “They provide a simple, secure platform for apps like NGPA to transform the productivity of enterprise smartphone users. We are delighted to be demonstrating Software Imaging’s NGPA app on our femto network at Mobile World Congress.”
“Software Imaging is working closely with Ubiquisys to bring a new printing experience to smartphone users”, said Mike Phillips, Director Mobile Products, Software Imaging. “Our NGPA print solution is unique in enabling direct printing of complex enterprise documents from smartphones. It is important for us to be able to support printing over 3G femtocells as we believe they will become one of the pervasive networks for homes, enterprises and retail locations.”
3G femtocells powered by Ubiquisys Femto-Engine will enable smartphones incorporating the Software Imaging NGPA solution to print in home, office and retail locations without the need to use a computer. Users can also queue documents to print whilst they are away from their femtocell network. For example, whilst commuting to the office you could read emails on a smartphone and select some for printing. As soon as you reach your office, the phone connects to the femto network, identifies the printer and automatically prints the selected emails.
Enterprise Femtocells powered by the Ubiquisys Femto-Engine automatically form a Self-Organising-Network (SON). This provides a seamless mobile experience anywhere in the office, which means that print jobs are passed within the femto network as users move around the building. Femtocells are ideal for this type of application: they work with any 3G mobile phone, user authentication is automatic and invisible, and the transmission is secure. Ubiquisys Femto-Engine features local data offload, where the femtocell can selectively route data locally rather than forcing everything through the operator’s core network.
About Femtocells
Femtocells are tiny 3G mobile access points that plug in to standard broadband connections in homes and businesses. They combine excellent mobile coverage indoors with very fast low cost data connections. As you arrive at a building with a femtocell, your phone automatically switches over from the outside network to the femtocell. Mobile operators are looking at ways of harnessing this combination of fast low-cost data and automatic presence to develop new services for their customers.
About NGPA
NGPA is a preloadable software solution that enables printing of all major document types directly from a smartphone to networked and directly connected printers. It supports 3G, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity and is capable of automatically discovering and configuring most types of printer. When printers are discovered they can be added to a favourites list and geotagged so that the user knows where the printer is next time they need it. NGPA will enable printing of Word, Powerpoint and Excel documents along with emails, messages, contacts, calendars, photos, maps, web pages and most other document formats. NGPA is currently available for Android smartphones and further releases will support Symbian, Windows Mobile and BlackBerry. In addition to direct printing, NGPA supports Print By PC and Cloud Printing methodologies.
